Living the Dream, by Lauren Berry (Holt Paperback, 15th August) If  La La Land  is the optimistic, American version of pursuing your dream, then this novel sounds like its cynical (or perhaps just realistic) British cousin, investigating what life looks like while you and your friend work a dead-end job and plug away at a popular blog thats not earning you a penny but at least you have each other. The Party, by Elizabeth Day (Little, Brown, 15th August) This is upper class Britishness at its most quintessential, with a touch of something darker as we gradually find out what happened at Bens fortieth party and what led up to it. If you loved Liz Nugents  Unravelling Oliver  (also out in the US this month), this is very much in the same vein it explores the impact of childhood and youth on explosive decisions in later years. The Doll Funeral, by Kate Hamer  (Melville House, 15th August) Kate Hamers bestselling first novel  The Girl in the Red Coat  was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and three other prizes, so shes an author to watch, if youre into thrillers. This one is about what happens when thirteen-year-old Ruby sets off  into the forest to find her biological parents, with nothing but a suitcase and an imaginary friend. You Dont Know Me But I Know You, by Rebecca Barrow (HarperTeen, 29th August) Another book with adoption at its heart, this one is a YA about newly pregnant Audrey who has just been given a letter that her biological mother wrote her seventeen years ago. Movie Analysis of Jaws Martin Brody is the new police chief trying to rid Amity Island of a savage shark terrorising the islanders and tourists alike in the 1976 thriller, Jaws. Jaws was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. Amity Island relies almost fully on the income gained by tourists visiting the island in the summer vacation. It is up to Martin Brody to protect the beach goers by finding the shark and killing it. This brings up issues of fighting fears as well as fighting the constant battle between humans and nature. The second attack is on a small boy in the sea at a crowded beach on Amity Island. It starts with the young boy asking his mother if he can go back into the sea. This makes us think that the girl is being attacked when she is not, this builds up tension because it hasn’t happened yet and we know it will do we just don’t no when. Using the wide angle shot of the shows us how big the sea is and how vulnerable people are in it. It then shows a boy running back into the water using mid range shot with the boy on the lilo n the background and the children in the fore ground. This makes us uneasy because there is a lot of splashing which means if the shark was to be there it would be camouflaged and also the splashing attracts sharks. Next, there is a close up shot of a small child singing, seeing the small child singing i s calming which lulls us into a false sense of security, making the imminent attack scarier as you do not expect it. The lack of proper funding for schools, retirement of many quality teachers, and the rise of Internet schools to name a few. But in the upcoming paragraphs I will focus mainly of the over emphasis on testing and how it affects the schools. Too much testing, and putting too much value into the tests has created a problem in which many teachers now strictly teach to the materials on the test, creating better scores, but decreasing overall knowledge. In fact it is just hurting the students because it limits the overall knowledge they receive in school. Making the facts available to everyone may not be a realistic goal, and even if it is achieved it may not be totally successful. Many people would still just look at the overall scores, notice the U. S. is low again, and become angry and demand changes be made. The problem of teaching to tests, and over emphasis on tests in general may get much worse if it is not corrected. Student may collect their confirmation slips at their nearest center 2 weeks prior to the commencement of examinations -Students who have outstanding fees will not be granted permission to write examination -Student has found guilty of disregarding Oval international rules and regulations 6. 4 Failure to write Students who do not attempt the final examination due to illness or circumstances beyond their control are required to submit proof to the ODL head office within 5 working days of the examination. 6. 5 Remarking of examination scripts Remarking of examination scribes will only be considered within 5 days after the examination marks are available to students. A fee of R200. 00 per examination will be charged for the re-mark. Supplementary Examinations Student who obtain a final mark between 25% -49% will qualify to write a supplementary examination The student who qualifies for the supplementary examination is required to pay an additional fee of R100. 00 and complete an application form. The form must be submitted to head office (email: [email  protected] co. za) The onus is on the student to enquire if they qualify for supplementary examinations. 6. 7 Examination Scope The Oval academic team will provide an examination scope before examination; this scope will serve as a guide for students writing examinations. Student Fee Oval has three payment plans designed to suit individual student needs (a)Cash Plan (full fee paid at registration) (b)Easi Plan (6 months) (c)Flexi Plan (10 months) Students are required to pay their fees according to the plan they have chosen. Registration Registration What does a student do after completing a year of study and wants to move onto the 2nd or 3rd year?A student is required to renew his/her registration at OVAL International on a year-to-year basis *A student is not automatically registered for the next year of study This must to done after the student receives a final marks for the entire year The student will need to complete his/her registration for the following year of study and attach his or her previous academic record/s in order to re – register. The registration must be submitted to an Oval centre nearest the student. Once the student’s application is received, an Oval Student Advisor will provide the student with a letter confirming his/her acceptance and outlining the fees for that academic year of study.The registration will only be processed if the student’s fees for the previous academic year have been settled in full, and current registration payment is made. Software Modules: Please be advised that the onus for the completion of the software modules (where applicable) is the responsibility of the student and will need to be conducted in one of the three methods below : 1. The student will be prescribed the textbook for the software but will need to complete an examination for this at a registered software training provider then submit the results to Oval to be included in his / her final results for the year. 2.The student may attend Oval International’s – Microsoft Office (3 Months programme) at an Oval campus nearest to the student, paying the relevant fees for the course. Then submit these marks for inclusion in his / her final results for the year. 3. Complete a Practical based prescribed assignment for submission on a CD for assessment and complete a Theory based examination as a final assessment for the module. In the first and second instances above, the student will not be billed for the software modules but the remainder of the theory modules selected.
