Vehicle Safety Essay - 1154 Words
In the recent years, the United States government has been enforcing stricter mandates on auto manufacturers to create safer vehicles, and on construction companies to create safer roadways. Matthew Jensen wrote a dissertation for the Graduate School of Clemson University titled, A Methodology for the Analysis of In-vehicle Operating Data and Design of Intelligent Vehicle Systems for Improved Automotive Safety. In his abstract, Jensen evaluated the future of vehicle manufacturing and traffic-related incidents. Of course, every year more vehicles are manufactured, which in theory means the number of miles driven in vehicles increases. He points out how the World Health Organization (WHO) found that automobile crashes was the ninthâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Generally speaking the items taken into account as vehicle speed, RPM, and throttle position as well as many other parameters. More recently developers to begin using accelerometer and global positional systems (GPS) to pro vide feedback to the driver (Jensen). Yet another critical component of safe driving is the human-vehicle interface (HVI), very similar to the human computer interface/ interaction (HCI). HVI is used to produce sounds, visual aids, and other forms of feedback such as the haptic steering wheel to alert the vehicle operator of the roadway conditions (traffic, construction environment, pedestrians). Since automobiles are operated by single individuals, the primary means of receiving feedback are visual. Since the introduction of HVI ââ¬Å"the cost for real-time control systems decreasesâ⬠and the new safety features provide information that hopes to improve decision-making response time (Jensen). The article describes three formats of in-vehicle feedback; visual, haptic, and audio. Each of the three formats to be broke down into various systems and functions. Very similar to a database containing tables, rows, and attributes. In the visual table, there are four rows one of which is the dashboard. The dashboard contains several aids including gauges, on-board diagnostics, GPS, and lamps. The haptic table contains the break/ throttle row, were pedal pulsation will notify the operator of activated antilock-brakes or traction control. These organizations set the standards to help minimize safety risks which include but are not limited to fire, explosion, and shock. These standards a re in place to try and assess the safety risk associated with these new technologies and to help engineer them to be safer. Each country has their own legislation of vehicle safety which manufacture has to abide by and produce documentation to prove that the vehicle is safe, in order to sell its vehicle in that particular country. Independent testing organisations, such as Euro NCAP, perform a number of safety tests on new vehicles to confirmRead MoreMotor Vehicle Safety Essays903 Words à |à 4 PagesMotor Vehicle Safety Motor accidents are one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the United States. In the year 2000 the National Highway Trafï ¬ c Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that around 41,000 people were killed in traffic accidents within the United States. This mortality rate has since dropped 25% from 2000 to 2009 (Rockett et al., 2012). There are many reasons for motor vehicle injuries, ranging from lack of seat belt use, elderly drivers, alcohol and young childrenRead MoreSystems Safety For Vehicle Maintenance2411 Words à |à 10 PagesRunning Head: SYSTEMS SAFETY IN VEHICLE MAINTENANCE SHOP Systems Safety in Vehicle Maintenance Shop BY Peter Mwangi SFTY 440, System Safety May, 4th 2015 ABSTRACT In order to employ the concepts of any system safety; we have to understand the notion behind it. In summation, we also ought to know what systems safeties are and what they strive to act in a given establishment. For instance, in RAF Mildenhall Vehicle Maintenance Flight, a lot of procedures are used in the day to day activitiesRead MoreSafety At Home And Motor Vehicle Crash1605 Words à |à 7 Pageslife-changing injuries. (Safety at Home; Motor Vehicle Crash) This just means people are dying everyday just because they wonââ¬â¢t put on their seatbelts. Arguably one of the most important pronouncements of his political career, Governor Corzine issued these words in a public service announcement once he recovered from injuries suffered in a car accident on April 12, 2007, an accident in which he wasnââ¬â¢t wearing his seatbelt. Corzineââ¬â¢s body was slammed around the inside of his SUV after the vehicle collided withRead MoreVehicle Safety : Features / Effectiveness, Role Of Traffic Psychologists, And Motor Vehicle Injury Control2126 Words à |à 9 Pages Vehicle Safety: Features/Effectiveness, Role of Traffic Psychologists, and Motor Vehicle Injury Control Vehicle safety is a growing concern of many U.S. citizens each year. As a society, it is expected to have a safe environment that people can be in without the stress and anxiety that they might have regarding safety in or around motor vehicles. Fortunately, vehicles have increased the amount of safety features over the years, allowing people to be more comfortable with their surroundings. VehicleRead MoreThe Safety Of Autonomous Vehicles941 Words à |à 4 PagesSmart Cars Gartner has estimated that by 2020 there will be 250 million connected cars on the worlds roads, which has left a considerable asking questions about the safety of autonomous vehicles (Scott). An autonomous vehicle is a mode of transportation that does not need a person driving it. Ciscoââ¬â¢s Smart Connected Vehicles division has a hypothesis which states that autonomous cars could eliminate as 85 percent of head-on collisions. One of the greatest problems that smart cars face is gettingRead MoreThe Safety Of A Autonomous Vehicles1494 Words à |à 6 Pagesbefore the deadly collision could occur. Vehicle collisions claim 30,000 lives every year in the United States (United States DOT). With autonomous vehicles, that number could be reduced substantially. Although vehicles are inherently dangerous, Americans should support the development of autonomous vehicles to obtain the many benefits and solutions to problems they face. Developing autonomous vehicles would lower the number of annual deaths caused by vehicle collisions to almost zero. Googleââ¬â¢s driverlessRead MoreThe Safety Of A Car Vehicle2467 Words à |à 10 PagesMost of the automotive companies believe that the next generation of cars are going to be autonomous vehicles, but not all of them have the same opinion about it. Some companies want to bring a fully autonomous car to reality, which wouldnââ¬â¢t need any human interaction to drive the car, while other ones are interested in driverless cars, which need humans to drive them. Both ââ¬Å"autonomousâ⬠and ââ¬Å"driverlessâ⬠concepts give cars more control over themselves, and both aim to give more comfort for mankindRead MoreOverview of Motor Vehicle Safety2505 Words à |à 10 Pagesï » ¿Motor/Vehicle Safety Introduction In order to deal with global and national road casualty reduction objectives and to achieve a more protected road traffic system, improvement of vehicle safety is a key policy. Vehicle safety, in actual, is a means to address the safety of all who use roads. At present, it consists of measures that are helpful in avoiding a crash or reducing injury in the occurrence of a crash. In the last two decades, considerable and evidence-based improvements have been made
